美国总统特朗普3月1日发布行政令，把英语定为美国官方语言。这是美国史上首次在国家层面上指定官方语言。

US President Donald Trump signed on Saturday an executive order designating English as the official language of the US, a first in the nation's history.

行政令写道，确定唯一一种官方语言“符合美国最佳利益”，旨在“促进团结、培育全体公民共同的美国文化，确保政府运转连贯性”等，这不仅将使沟通顺畅，而且能“强化共同的国家价值观，提高社会凝聚力和效率”。

对于“新美国人”而言，“说英语不仅在经济方面打开各扇大门，而且帮助他们融入社会，参加各种国家传统活动，并且回馈社会”。

"Establishing English as the official language will not only streamline communication but also reinforce shared national values, and create a more cohesive and efficient society," according to the order.

"In welcoming new Americans, a policy of encouraging the learning and adoption of our national language will make the United States a shared home and empower new citizens to achieve the American dream," the order also states. "Speaking English not only opens doors economically, but it helps newcomers engage in their communities, participate in national traditions, and give back to our society."

特朗普下令废除民主党籍总统比尔·克林顿执政时期签发的行政令，后者要求美国各联邦机构保障英语程度有限的人群获得它们提供的服务。

It rescinds a mandate from former president Bill Clinton that required the government and organizations that received federal funding to provide language assistance to non-English speakers.

不过，新的总统行政令不强制要求各联邦机构改变目前提供的各项服务，不必停止提供非英语的文件、产品和其他服务。

据美国政府网站介绍，美国没有官方语言，英语是美国使用最广泛的语言，一些州先前将英语指定为官方语。美联社报道，数十年来，一直有一些国会议员试图推动立法把英语定为官方语言，但没有成功。

法新社援引美国政府2019年发布的数据报道，美国将近6800万人在家中不使用英语，其中超过4000万人在家中使用西班牙语。

The US is home to about 40 million Spanish speakers, and in Puerto Rico, a US territory, 94% of residents speak Spanish.

白宫网站的西班牙语版本网页在特朗普第一个总统任期内被关停，约瑟夫·拜登就任总统后重新上线。特朗普今年1月再次出任总统后，白宫网站西班牙语版本再次被关。白宫当时回应称，西语版本今后将恢复，不过截至目前尚未恢复。
